‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’ Let’s You Play Both Genders, By Default
The option to choose between two playable characters’ gender is nothing new to Assassin’s Creed. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Odyssey allowed players to pick which character to play as, with the latter letting you swap between characters at any point in the game. What makes Valhalla different is that the story is about one central character instead of two different people.
Earlier this year, it was announced that you could choose which gender the main protagonist of Valhalla will be. But, in a recent gameplay breakdown of the upcoming installment to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, it was revealed that not only can you switch genders at any time during Valhalla’s campaign, but the game will automatically swap genders on the fly by default. The option is called “Let the Animus decide,” with the description below it reading, “The Animus will represent the stronger female or male memory-stream, depending on its current strength.”
When a confused fan asked for more clarification on this option on Twitter, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Narrative Director, Darby McDevitt, responded by saying that the “Let the Animus decide” is canon and that both characters will appear at various points in the game with this option.
It means "Let the Animus decide" is canon. And both characters will appear at various points when you choose this option. So both are canon.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be released on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia and PC on November 10, with the PS5 version arriving on the launch of that system.
