It’s hard to believe that Dragon Quest will be celebrating its 35th anniversary next year. While the series isn’t much of a top sales charter in the west, like Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest has always been a monster hit in Japan, with Dragon Quest XI selling more than six million copies since it first launched on the PS4 back in 2017.

Last week, Square Enix held an event for Dragon Quest X Matsuri, an online Japanese-exclusive RPG based on the franchise. During the event, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii shared with fans that several announcements were coming in 2021 in honor of the series 35th anniversary. “Dragon Quest is celebrating its 35th anniversary next year. I think we’ll have several announcements for that, including new ways to enjoy the world of Astoltia. I hope you’ll keep supporting the series.”

For those not in the know about Dragon Quest, Astotlia is a setting from Dragon Quest X, An MMO released only in Japan.

The last main installment in the series was Dragon Quest XI, released on PS4 and PC. A special edition of the game was released on the Nintendo Switch, with this version arriving on PS4 and Xbox One in December worldwide.
