'DeathLoop' Release Date Announced

Sony has dropped a new minute-long ad for a few new games coming to the PS5 in 2021. Along with already confirmed games coming exclusively to the PS5, Like Horizon 2, Gran Turismo 7 and the new Ratchet and Clank game, we got to see some gameplay of other games, like Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Project Athia. During the ad, Sony shared some new details regarding the these three games in particular.

While Sony and Bethesda already announced that Deathloop would be a timed exclusive for the console version of the game, it seems that Ghostwire: Tokyo and Project Athia are also timed exclusives for the PS5. Throughout the ad, the gameplay videos of Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo and Project Athia also contained messages saying that these games will be timed exclusives for the PS5. Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo will be exclusive for the PS5 for a year, while Project Athia will remain on Sony’s system for two years.

This means that Xbox Series X/S owners won’t be able to play these titles for quite some time (though PC gamers will enjoy all of these games alongside PS5 owners.) It’s extremely disappointing since Microsoft spent billions of dollars acquiring Bethesda, which is publishing both Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

Timed exclusives are nothing new for console games. Xbox had both Rise of the Tomb Raider and Dead Rising 4 as timed exclusive to the Xbox One for a year before they were both released on PS4. In contrast, Sony has had publishers like Activision, Square Enix and Ubisoft, giving them platform-exclusive content.

From game modes in the last few Call of Duty games coming first to PlayStation 4, special PlayStation exclusive-missions in a few of the Assassin’s Creed titles, to even Spider-Man being an exclusive character in the PlayStation versions of Marvel’s Avengers, Sony has made a few deals to ensure that consumers buy the PlayStation version of third-party games. But now, Sony seems to be doubling down on the timed exclusive bandwagon more than Xbox ever did.

While release dates for most of the games weren’t announced, they will release in 2021. Deathloop is still on course for a release date of May 21, 2021, for PS5 and PC.
