The fifth installment of the Gears of War series is upon us. Gears 5 is a Microsoft exclusive; the series was formally developed by Fornite studio Epic Games until Coalition took over the series. A few weeks back at this year’s E3, we saw more exclusive footage of the new installment during the Microsoft presser. The upcoming third-person hit shooter is coming in September, and Coalition has recently released info regarding loot boxes and a season pass. Players will be able to earn additional content, such as skins and other customization trinkets, through the “Tour of Duty” initiative, and there will be free DLC, meaning no season pass. Could this game be any more promising?

The developers have promised free additional content after their release of the game, including free unlockables throughout the game and free downloadable maps for the multiplayer servers.

Along with the news of free goodies, there is a new three player co-op mode called Escape. If you’ve ever played Gears of War‘s Horde Mode, it’s virtually the opposite. You’ll be placed in a hell-hole type place, Doom style, and have to make your way out fighting waves of enemies with your two other teammates.

While they have promised no season pass or lootboxes, it’s not completely confirmed the game doesn’t lack microtransactions. It’s hard to think of the last major release that didn’t have some sort of micotransactions, but we will have to wait and see until September.

“We are committed to ensuring we preserve a fair competitive environment across our modes,” Coalition said, according to Polygon. “There will be no items in the store that provide a competitive advantage for real-money purchasers, i.e. no pay to win.”

Gears 5 is set to release on September 10 on Xbox One and PC. If you’re highly anticipating this game, however, there will be a “beta” of some sort that will be testing the versus menus that is scheduled for July 19. The new Escape mode is also set to have its own test in August.
